National Conference on Volunteering and Service

Notes from the 2012 National Conference on Volunteering and Service

  (www.volunteeringandservice.org):

The venue was the McCormick Conference Center in Chicago. Keynote speakers included Chicago mayor Raim Emanuel, Jill Biden, and Barbara Bush, and actor Kevin Bacon. I took away a number of good ideas from many great organizations. I would like to share two organizations of particular interest related to the environment.

  1. TerraCycle (http://www.terracycle.com) offers national programs to collect previously non-recyclable or hard to recycle waste. Most offer free shipping as well as a donation for each piece of garbage that is collected.
  2. RandomKid (http://www.randomkid.org) is an award winning organization for kids, educators and youth group leaders that is changing the world.

Both websites offer a variety of project ideas, resources, and support information for educators. Check them out!
