ECSL has long-supported literacy as a service learning initiative. In a former meeting, we heard about global efforts to bring books to children through the story My Librarian is a Camel. Here is an opportunity, brought to us by an ECSL member, to support literacy via GlobalGiving.org. Alif Laila, a story teller bus, is crowdfunding to bring book by bicycle to children in Pakistan. ECSL has lost one of its earliest leaders, a most ardent supporter for advancing genuine service learning, a guiding light, & a gentle, inspiring mentor to all who had the fortune of exchanging ideas with her.  Ann Nelson came to ECSL in our second year of infancy and was a precious participant as we grew over the last 25 years. She served as an indispensable voice on our Strategic Council, was an anchor for more round-table conversations than can be enumerated, created most our of ECSL handout materials from bookmarks to pamphlets and even made puzzle pieces when we needed to demonstrate how the 5 steps of service learning fit together.  She participated at all our national and state conference  presentations and developed unique and innovative service learning curriculum. Her creative energy and generosity resonates through the spectacular “spirit dolls” she hand-stitched and decorated for annual recognition of an exceptional ECSL participant. Henceforth this honor will be the “Ann Nelson Spirit Award”.  Her legacy lives on through our continued efforts to grow meaningful Service Learning.
